Calling all female MMA fighters

PrimeTime Management group Ltd, who are responsible for the publicity of Mania Women's Sport Fighting, are looking to expand. Next year PrimeTime will be holding six shows, all of which will be televised. The shows will be a version of females (modified) Mixed Martial Arts.

For the events we need to build a team of women who would like to fight under a PimeTime sponsors logo, while still representing there own club.

The fight nights usually have a theme to them; the first one next year will be "Aussie VS New Zealand" for which we intend to bring over a high profile team of Australian fighters.

One of the other nights will be a "Battle of the Codes" where Wrestlers and Judo fighters square off against all other codes of fighting.

The event we are about to hold (which will be yearly) is "Battle of the Bombay's" where we are having Waikato fighters challenge Auckland.

So as you can see the nights are intended to always be challenging and with some-thing and some-one new each show.

This is why we need you.

Popularity of female fight nights are growing both in NZ and beyond. We know this because the fights are starting to sell out and the sponsors are getting more involved.

With six TV spots to fill next year we would like to profile as many NZ fighters as possible. On top of the shows we are starting to be involved in overseas shows and DVD releases. To best represent our great country we need to display a range of fighters from a range of fighting backgrounds.

So if you are interested read on and I will answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

How do I fight under PrimeTime but still represent my club?

This is a good question and one I get asked a lot. First of all primetime has no gym and trains no fighters so it would be impossible for us to try to represent you as being trained by us.

What we do is bring publicity, sponsors and an audience together with fighters of a high caliber.

You would need to be prepared to wear the sponsor's logo and take direction from the Managers of PrimeTime (mostly if overseas) but where possible you will have YOUR trainer in your corner and when interviewed will state clearly the gym you represent.

While fighting at the NZ shows this will always happen, it is if you are offered an overseas fight with us that we can't guarantee to be able to take your support system and you would have to be guided by us.

You can choose to ONLY be involved in a one off show... say "Battle of the Bombay's" if that appeals to your senses.

The outcome we are trying to achieve is more exposure of NZ women fighters.

What style of fighting are the shows?

The style of fighting PrimeTime promotes is a blend of wrestling and Martial arts.

THE REASON we choose this style is partly marketability. The TV networks want to see a hardcore style of fighting that doesn't have striking to the face. Women who fight are becoming popular, but even with the guys they hesitate to show any of the blood injuries.

The other reason we choose this style is that most codes of fighting can adapt to it.

How do you learn the rules?

PrimeTime are lucky enough to have Nelly Stallworthy a well established Judo fighter, who also fights at "Mania" to help take short seminars.

Nelly has been fighting for Mania long enough to be well aware of all the rules but has come from approx ten years of fighting at various other club's.

Nelly is a former National Judo champ and is a one Darn Black Belt.

These seminars will be run often and are intended to familiarize you with the fighting style, and also get you in a wrestling style ring (as it is different).

Some fighters have contacted us and we have sent them tickets to one of our shows, as a way for them to check first if they could see themselves fighting with us.

I think this is a great idea and if you are keen e-mail me on belindad@orcon.net.nz and I will send you and your trainer a ticket.

We recommend you bring your trainer as he/she can guide you on your abilities and if the opportunity is right for you... your trainer knows you, we don't.

I will leave this notice at that for now, but will update with answers to your questions when I receive them. The only stupid question is one you don't ask, so don't hesitate to be frank.

Be patient waiting for an answer as I spend a lot of time out of the country, but you are important to us and I will get back to you.

Last Friday at the Isleta Casino and Resort in Albuquerque, N.M., there was an entertaining night of boxing that highlighted female fighters. "Finally," as the card was billed, was a PPV event that featured Holly Holm vs. Mary Jo Sanders in a main event for the Women's Boxing Archive Network (WBAN) pound-for-pound belt and the IFBA junior middleweight title.

Holms, fast and slick, worked hard to pile up points over her aggressive rival and won a unanimous decision. The other three televised fights were exciting in their own right. All in all, it was an exciting, competitive night of women's boxing that was a credit to the sport, promoted by Fresquez Promotions and broadcast by Integrated Sports PPV.

Despite a disappointing production that frequently posted graphics incorrectly or misspelled them, the event had the advantage of Al Bernstein, one of the best in the business behind the mic, and, most importantly, eight tough athletes who left it all in the ring. They are the ones who made the PPV investment worthwhile, and perhaps created a seminal moment in the world of women's boxing.

Two young women in Iowa City, Iowa, hoping to soon break out into ring success of their own in the near future, may well benefit from any such advancement in the game of women's boxing. In fact, they have the potential to become to the next future box-office stars, given a little luck and the right opportunities.

Emily and Katy Klinefelter, 24 and 20 years old, shatter every preconceived notion of what a female fighter should be. They are two beautiful Jewish women from the state of Iowa who attend the University of Iowa, receiving straight A's while dominating the amateur boxing scene for the past several years. Both speak fluent Spanish and Katy also speaks Portuguese.

Emily, who graduated in 2006 with a 4.0 GPA, was the valedictorian of her class and is now pursuing her Masters in accounting. She has won 13 national and two international Gold Medals. She was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. at 110 pounds in 2003 and 2004. WBAN named Emily as the Amateur Boxer of the Year in 2004 and 2006. She turned pro early this year and is 1-0, fighting at 118 pounds.

And in her spare time Emily teaches two classes of undergrad accounting.

Emily has been married for two years to attorney Adam Pollack, who also serves as coach to the sisters. Pollack, described by Emily as a "boxing fanatic," owns a library of boxing DVDs and has written three books on boxing.

Both Emily and Katy are managed by Kelli Mathis.

Katy is single and at 5-6 is three inches taller than her older sister. She can fight at any weight between 126 and 135 pounds, depending on the availability of opponents.

"In women's boxing you have to take what you can get," she said, explaining her availability in three weight classes.

Katy has won four national amateur championships. She began to develop an interest in boxing at age 13 and needed someone to drive her to the gym. Emily began taking her and decided that she liked it herself and soon was on board.

"We had no expectation of hitting another person or getting hit ourselves," Emily said. "It was a twist of fate."

"She didn't want me to be able to beat her up," Katy cracked. "Actually she pushes me to work so we're a good duo."

Katy will enter her senior year at Iowa next year with a major in Sport Health Promotions, which she hopes will be her career eventually. She was hoping to make her pro debut on June 27 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City. Emily is also scheduled to appear on the card.

However the recent flood of biblical proportions has cruelly ravaged the state and the fairgrounds is currently a sanctuary for some of the thousands of homeowners displaced by the storm. Katy wants very much to make her debut in her hometown and says that if the June 27 show is postponed she will appear on the next show.

Emily, who lives two blocks from the river, said that all the bridges have been closed as well as four of the five roads out of town. The sisters just feel fortunate that they are located on high ground, unlike so many of their fellow Iowans.

Despite of all of the obstacles inherent in a professional career as a female in boxing, they have set lofty goals for themselves, also possibly future interests in Women's MMA.

Katy simply says that her ultimate goal is, "A world championship. To be the best of the best."

Emily says that her greatest aspiration is, "To have a great boxing career. Maybe I'll be on BoxRec and it'll be a permanent record. I want a career I can be proud of and tell my kids and grandkids about it someday."

How far will she go?

"As far as I can," Emily replies. "I was an amateur for seven tears and I'll give my career at least seven years. I know I have to be patient because it takes women longer to get their careers going."

Both sisters are realistic about the trials of breaking through the boxing glass ceiling. In a sport dominated by men, women have been placed on the backburner, almost a novelty act, and working comparatively for peanuts.

Still, Emily says that she feels a huge difference in the skill level of women since making her start seven years ago, and believes that sex appeal rather than talent is often used to promote the ladies of the ring.

"I think it is," she began. "I don't want to say it's unfortunate because that's just the reality of any sport. It's entertainment. I'll put on a little makeup for a photo shoot, but I'm not going to wear makeup in the ring."

Katy perceptively observed that, "If there's a crappy women's bout on a men's card, people attribute that to all women. Women are held to a higher standard because they have to go above and beyond what is expected.

"Emily and I are trying to change that."

The Klinefelters have no other siblings and Katy said that their parents "are supportive, but not heavily involved. My mom knows we won't get hurt."

On top of all of their other interests and activities Emily said that, "We've recently gotten involved with PAL (Police Athletic League). We don't have one in all of Iowa. We're on the board of directors. I'm the treasurer, Katy's the secretary. We improved the gym and we're planning on opening our doors on June 30th."

So, in some measure, the success of Holly Holm is a success for the Klinefelters, and maybe hundreds of other young women around the country. Still, women's boxing hasn't even merited participation in the Olympics, let alone professional acceptance.

There's going to be a lot of hard work ahead for these athletes to gain recognition, and the sisters stand ready to do their part.

GFC Fighting Styles

It has also been asked by a few members why we

are including all forms, street, mma, boxing, etc.

Couple reasons:

*MMA and most Martial Arts are based on self-defense

and street application.

*Most of the top fighters roots are from the streets,

Bas Rutten, Kimbo, Bruce Lee, Marco "King of the Streets" Ruas,

the Gracie family, Gina Carano....just as there are many other

"female Kimbos" who will transition and become top fighters

and champions.

*Most who like or are "born" to fight are the ones who

become pro fighters. Some girls are better than others

whether in the street or ring, and *many* have already

shown an interest in training and/or becoming pros. Those

who do may be referred either here or to other teams/crews in their areas.

One of our primary goals is to transition as many females from other styles whether, boxing, street, muay thai, wrestling into the rapidly growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts....as well as attracting as many new fans from all areas and demographic profiles. We are and will be working with various other leagues and organizations which are serious about similar goals and are all about helping support the growth of all forms of female reality combat.
